Obviously, you only have to buy the game (CD-ROM) itself only once for each version: World of Warcaft (basic game), Burning Crusade (2007 add) and Wrath of the Lich King (2008 add). THese all are about 30-50 euro. Some stores might offer a so-called ‘battlechest’ (or something like that), which has all copies in once.

The monthly subscription (the 30 days) is separate from the game (CD ROM); you need this to actually play, although there is a trail available. this trail version lets you play WoW (basic version i think) without being able to transfer object to other players, use the Auction House, and other stuff.

To answer your question: no, when you buy WOW, BC or WOTLK you don’t get play time or a subscription, you need to make an account separately (fee is about 15 dollar, 13 euro).

If you already have it, update your account to Burning Crusade to be able to make Draenei, and have Alliance access to Shamans, and Blood Elf, and have Horde access to Paladins. You also need it to get the Jewel Crafting profession because all the JC trainers are all in BC only areas.

If you don’t care for any of the stuff I mentioned, you can delay getting Burning Crusade until you’re level 60.
